Why we picked it

The salt-free, chloride-free melter for homes with dogs: slow, mild-winter only, and the one jug that will not burn paws or pit a new driveway.

Known issue · Does little below about 20 F and works slowly above it, so the ice that salt clears in an hour is still there at lunch; owners who buy it for the dog accept the trade and the rest send it backTechGearLab ice melt test · hands-on

Built from 3 sources: 1 owner thread, 1 hands-on review, 1 spec page.

Take it home if

  • No salt and no chloride, so no burned paws, no pitted concrete, no dead lawn edge
  • Shaker-lid jug that lives by the door; nothing to track onto floors
  • Residual effect keeps a treated walk from refreezing for a day or two

Walk past if

  • Slow, and near useless below about 20 F in independent testing
  • Several times the cost of rock salt for the same walk
  • A traction aid more than a melter once the cold sets in; keep sand too
